Throughout his life Barrie wished to recapture the happy years before his mother was stricken, and he retained a strong childlike quality in his adult personality. Barrie studied at the University of Edinburgh and spent two years on the Nottingham Journal before settling in London as a freelance writer in His first successful book, Auld Licht Idylls , contained sketches of life in Kirriemuir, and the stories in A Window in Thurms continued to explore that setting.
The Little Minister , a highly sentimental novel in the same style, was a best seller , and, after its dramatization in , Barrie wrote mostly for the theatre. Most of those early works are marked by quaint Scottish dialect , whimsical humour and comic clowning, pathos , and sentimentality. Conversing with Davies, Barrie sussed out her connection to du Maurier, and she in turn recognized him as the man who sometimes entertained her sons by telling them fairy stories in Kensington Gardens while they strolled with their nanny.
Having amused the boys with his playful overtures and having charmed Sylvia as well, Barrie soon inveigled his way into the Davies household. It was to them, through whom he began to live again the experience of childhood, that he told his first Peter Pan stories, some of which were published in The Little White Bird Much of that volume was later republished as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens The suggestion of impropriety was sometimes supported by admittedly odd excerpts from The Little White Bird , including one that featured a man plotting to turn a young boy against his mother in order to gain exclusive access to his affections.

James Matthew Barrie was born at Kirriemuir in Forfarshire, the seventh child to David Barrie, a hand-loom weaver, and Margaret Ogilvie, the daughter of a stone-mason. Surviving on the income provided by declining weaving industry, the Barries were never wealthy and it is from his early childhood experiences as a dweller in the tenements that Barrie drew his sympathetic portraits of the rural poor.
In he went to study for three years at Glasgow Academy before returning to Forfarshire where he attended the local school. Then, from he spent his teenage years at Dumfries Academy before moving to Edinburgh to attend University at the age of Barrie was unmoved by his University experience and he derived his intellectual inspiration largely from the theatre. Upon graduating he was already writing theatrical reviews, a career which eventually led him to London in where he would produce his first plays.

Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM 9 May 19 June was a Scottish author and dramatist, the child of a family of small-town weavers, and best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. He was educated in Scotland but moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright.
There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens included in The Little White Bird , then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, a “fairy play” about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. Peter Pan quickly overshadowed his previous work, although he continued to write successfully, and it became his best-known work, credited with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously.
In Mr. Barrie’s novel has been accepted everywhere as the most important book which he has ever written — a character-study of remarkable originality.
